The Mystery of Edwin Drood

gothic-cathedral-noir

Cloisterham, a fictional cathedral town in the marshes of Kent, England. Christmas Eve, 1842. The action centres on a private dinner party at the Gatehouse — choirmaster John Jasper's lodgings above the cathedral arch — with the High Street, the Crozier Hotel, the Nuns' House school, the Reverend Crisparkle's residence, and the river-path crossing all within walking distance. Travel times between key locations: Gatehouse ↔ Crozier (4 min), Gatehouse ↔ Nuns' House (3 min), Gatehouse ↔ river crossing (8 min), Gatehouse ↔ Crisparkle's (6 min).

Premise

Edwin Drood, a young engineer newly returned from London, comes to Cloisterham for Christmas to dine with his uncle John Jasper at the Gatehouse. By his side, but at uneasy distance, is Rosa Bud — his fiancée by the wills of their late fathers, never quite by their own choosing. Also present: the dark-eyed twins Neville and Helena Landless, fresh from Ceylon and resented by old Cloisterham; the gentle Reverend Crisparkle, Neville's guardian; and the lawyer Grewgious, who has earlier that day delivered Rosa's mother's engagement ring into Edwin's keeping. By midnight a stranger has been seen on the cathedral grounds — an opium-den mistress called Princess Puffer — and Edwin has vanished. The dinner is the murder's only certain hour. The river runs cold. The cathedral bells continue to toll. Three people, on three different nights of repeated retelling, prove to be the killer — but the lies, the loves, and the laudanum bottle are always the same.
